ANALYSE

Die zentrale Einsicht kommt im Pre-Chorus, und sie ist der Grund, warum das gesamte Regime versagt: 'the wound it was supposed to reach was never wired to the veins.' Sein Problem ist nicht chemisch, also verfehlt die Chemie es immer wieder, 'dialling at a number that was never in the chain.' Ein einziges Mal fällt die Stimmbearbeitung völlig weg, für die nackteste Frage des Albums, 'is there a real me under all of this', und der Refrain hat längst geantwortet, 'nobody home, nobody home'. Neun Songs später antwortet Grounded über die ganze Platte hinweg: 'You are down. You are home.'

LYRICS

Something to start, something to stop (something in the system) something to be the you they want (something in the system) One to boot the morning up, the version that clocks the work one that wears the office face, the switch that fakes a steady perk a glass between the two of you, the one they think and one you are a small white edge to make the hours run smoother, cleaner, not too far you read it like a manual, step by step by careful step you are the stable hand in here, who keeps the pose and keeps the debt and it runs, it holds, it carries you, the day they said it ought to last then the timer does the thing it does, it stops, and you are back, and back, and back And the wound it was supposed to reach was never wired to the veins you keep dialling at a number that was never in the chain Always on something, always on something (nobody home, nobody home) take it to feel one true thing (nobody home, nobody home) an hour of weather, then nothing again always on something, again, and again One for the night to loosen up, the after-shift poured in a glass alcohol to blur the edge, then powders chasing overpass to stand a single hour of it, the loud, the warm, the almost-near the almost-touch, the almost-laugh, the almost-anybody-here and Sunday comes hung over, hollow, buzzing faint and sick with it the blinds still down, the stomach turned, the body in the chair, unlit slow sleepers for the daylight ache, four pale stones to dull the chest small painkillers for the throb of you, the day-after hum pinned flat, at rest no version honest, no version brighter, no plain one underneath the rest you go looking for a someone and the room behind the eyes is guessed Up to build, up to go out, down to come down hard again the same low even drip of it, the metronome, the line, the vein (and you ask it once, no auto-tune, the one unprocessed crack) is there a real me under all of this or just the drip, and nothing coming back Always on something, always on something (nobody home, nobody home) take it to feel one true thing (nobody home, nobody home) an hour of weather, then nothing again always on something, again, and again None of it reaches, none of it reaches (nobody home) none of it reaches (nobody home) ooh-hoo, ooh-hoo and there may be no one to reach no one to no one
